Panel inquires into Dalit girl’s gang rape

Taking suo motu cognisance of the report in The Hindu on the recent gang-rape of a 14-year-old Dalit girl in Harur, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes’ fact-finding team arrived here and held in-camera proceedings with the girl and her family on Saturday.

Further, the team supervised the issue of relief of Rs.1.80 lakh to the victim by the administration.

The 14-year-old Arunthathiyar girl was gang-raped by five men on two different days on April 8 and 10 on her way back from school and the same was photographed to further victimise and blackmail the girl.

The girl contacted the ChildLine before she was rescued. The six accused, including four juveniles, have since been remanded.

The three-member team headed by P. Ramasamy, Assistant Director, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, held an independent in-camera inquiry with the victim, her parents, the Child Welfare Committee and Child Line officials, and the police.

Mr. Ramasamy said, “We took suo motu cognisance of the report in The Hindu and arrived here. It is a shocking incident, and we will continue to monitor the case and ensure it is proceeded in a proper manner.”

The girl’s father, a wage labourer, is qualified with an M.A. B.Ed and is very keen on his daughter’s education. “Her father never got a job, but he’s keen on his daughter’s education. We will ensure the girl, also a class topper, continues her studies in a different environment,” Mr. Ramasamy said.
