In what could be termed as a Herculean task, the officials of Rural Water Supply (RWS) diverted water from Nallavagu to Narayankhed on Sunday. Water was supplied through reverse pumping. This will quench the thirst of about 50,000 people in the constituency - 30,000 in the constituency headquarters, and of 20,000 people in 27 villages and tandas.
Within three weeks, the work was completed with complete commitment and coordination among officials of RWS and electricity.
Narayankhed is one of the most backward areas and the constituency headquarters has been suffering from lack of drinking water supply for the past three months.
During the by-election, Irrigation Minister T. Harish Rao promised that Nallavagu water would be brought to Narayankhed to quench the thirsty of people. As promised, the officials commenced work at Nallavagu on March 21 and it was completed by April 10. They spent about Rs. 20 lakh to bring the water to Narayankhed.
According to Chandramouli, DE, RWS, water is being lifted to 100 metres so that it can reach the end point at Challagidda from where it can flow on gravity without depending on power usage.
One 1,100 litre per minute (LPM) capacity 50 HP pump was pressed into service to pump water while another pump was kept stand by to meet any requirement. “We have to complete some other works at end point and it will take some more time. Water will be supplied on alternate days to Narayankhed and other villages,” said Mr. Chandramouli. Collector D. Ronald appreciated the officials for completing the task in short duration.
