A team of doctors from renowned Stanford School of Medicine and Harvard University of Medical Sciences, who are studying neonatal treatment across the globe, have also included SCNU (Special Care Neonatal Unit) at Government General Hospital, Nalgonda in their project.
Speaking to The Hindu , Damara Yadaiah, SCNU Nodal Officer, said that neonatalogists Vinod K. Bhutani (Stanford) and John A.F. Zupanic (Harvard) had visited SCNU in May last as part of their study. Since they wanted to compare the treatment given to infants born with low weight through Kangaroo Mother Care and Conventional Incubator Care across the globe, Dr. Yadaiah said that they included SCNUs located in Harvard, Stanford, two other units in Cape town in South Africa, Manipal University of Medical Sciences, Manipal, Ferandez Hospital, Hyderabad and Saint Johns Hospital, Bangalore apart from Nalgonda SCNU.
After their visit last year, Mr. Yadaiah said that the doctors from the USA had communicated with them many a times over e-mails and had a discussion through video conference on August 21. The Nodal Officer said that the doctors from all SCNUs would assemble at New Delhi to finalise the protocol of the project. He added that they were overwhelmed by the rare opportunity of working with expert doctors from across the world which would help them improve the quality of treatment given to infants in Nalgonda. “We are already seeing good result which is what attracted the Harvard an Stanford doctors’ team, Dr. Yadaiah said.
