One-day bandh called by all the Opposition parties in Metpally town on Saturday in protest against the alleged adamant attitude of member of Parliament from Nizamabad K. Kavitha in not taking any measures for the revival of the Nizam Deccan Sugars Limited in Muthyampet village of Mallapur mandal was complete and peaceful.
All shops and business establishments remained closed following the bandh call given by the farmers’ organizations and opposition parties, including Congress and the BJP. The Opposition parties leaders took out rallies in Metpally and observed bandh in a peaceful manner. However, the police arrested the agitating leaders in the town.
The farmers of the region have been on a relay hunger strike since long demanding the revival of the sugar factory in Muthyampet village in Metpally. On Friday, Nizamabad MP Kavitha visited Metpally town to attend a marriage. The farmers wanted to meet her and submit a petition. The police refused them permission to meet her and gave them an assurance that the MP would visit their agitating camp. But, the MP’s convoy went away without stopping at the agitation camp. Irked by this, the farmers tried to stop the convoy and the police foiled their attempts.
Immediately, the farmers staged a dharna on the highway and criticised the attitude of the MP. They also demanded that the MP should tender an apology for insulting the farmers who were demanding their legitimate right of revival of sugar factory. The protesting farmers warned that they would not allow her to visit Jagtial assembly segment.
