An under-construction portico inside the Film Nagar Cultural Centre here collapsed on Sunday, leading to the death of two workers. Anshoor Shaik and Anand, both 35, died when the pillars meant to support the slab being laid at the entrance to the popular club, gave way around noon.

10 injured

Ten other workers at the construction site were injured and were rushed to a nearby private hospital.

Search and rescue operations were chaotic as debris from collapsed sections hampered efforts. According to the attendance register maintained by the club security, 15 workers had reported for work on Sunday morning but the injured and the deceased accounted for 12.

With three workers presumed to be trapped under the debris, search operations continued till late in the evening under floodlights.

Police, GHMC and NDRF personnel were involved in ground operations throughout the day to clear the debris.

Since the entrance road to the club was narrow, transporting cranes and rescue materials posed a challenge to the officials.

Sans permission

Minister for Animal Husbandry, T. Srinivas Yadav, Home Minister N. Narasimha Reddy and GHMC Mayor Bonthu Rammohan said the structure had no permission from GHMC and strict action would be taken against those responsible for the incident.
