Khammam gears up for solid waste management

To ensure scientific disposal of garbage and conversion of solid waste into energy

November 17, 2014 10:35 pm | Updated 10:35 pm IST - KHAMMAM:

A city sanitation plan encompassing specific provisions for segregation of dry and wet waste at source in Khammam Municipal Corporation is on the anvil.

The new initiative forms an essential component of the municipal solid waste management plan mooted by the civic body with a futuristic perspective to ensure scientific disposal of garbage and convert the solid waste into energy.

Awareness campaigns on systematic disposal of garbage, proper monitoring of segregation and collection of the solid waste forms the crux of the plan.

Sources said that the plan envisages supply of the processed solid waste to a garbage-based power plant in the neighbouring Mothe mandal of Nalgonda district.

The move is expected to usher in multi-faceted benefits in terms of preventing indiscriminate dumping of garbage, safeguarding public health and generating power from waste.

The plan also includes proposals to set up new dumping yards on the outskirts of the town to ensure systemic disposal of the huge volume of garbage being generated from not only the town but the neighbouring Gram Panchayats, those earlier merged with the Khammam municipal corporation.

Trained extension workers will be appointed for every 350 households in the town to personally monitor the segregation of dry and wet waste at source, collection and transfer of the segregated waste to the dumping yard, said Venu Manohar, in-charge Municipal Commissioner of Khammam.

The extension workers will act as resource persons to motivate people adhere to the municipal solid waste management plan, he said adding that the processed waste will be supplied to the upcoming garbage-based power plant in the neighbouring district.

Efforts are under way to identify suitable site for setting up an additional dumping yard in the town as the corporation has only one dumping yard near Danvaigudem at present.
