A labourer couple from Motamarri village in Bonakal mandal allegedly sold their 16-day-old baby girl to a childless couple belonging to Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh due to abject poverty a few days ago.

The shocking incident came to light on Sunday after some villagers tipped off the local police about it.

According to police sources, Yesobu and Mariamma, labourers belonging to Motamarri, allegedly sold their 16-day-old baby girl to a couple from Nemali village in Gampalagudem mandal of Andhra Pradesh five days ago.

The labourer couple already have three daughters, the sources said.

The couple allegedly handed over their baby girl to the childless couple through a mediator unable to bring up the baby girl, their fourth daughter, owing to their miserable financial condition.

The Bonakal police registered a case against the labourer couple as well as the childless couple, who had bought the baby girl and also the mediator.

Bonakal sub-inspector of police V. Srinivas is investigating the case.
