Khammam bus accident: Fishermen turn saviours

August 23, 2016 02:27 am | Updated September 20, 2016 03:48 pm IST - KHAMMAM:

A group of fishermen from Nayakangudem turned saviours for several passengers, trapped in the bus after it plunged into the irrigation canal.

Local fishermen woke up to the deafening sound of the ill-fated bus crashing through the makeshift barrier on the bridge.

The trapped passengers inside the bus were screaming for help, said Rambabu, a local fisherman.

“As an injured woman yelled for help, we smashed the windowpanes of the bus and pulled her and her one-year-old baby out,” said Ramesh, another fisherman.

“The local fishermen came to our rescue and saved us by breaking the windowpanes of the bus,” said a grateful Venkatasuryasai, who was rescued with her infant daughter Harshavardhini.

“We are alive now thanks to the swift response from the fishermen to our distress calls.”

“We woke up to loud noise and found ourselves trapped inside the bus,” said K. Satyanarayana, another injured passenger.
