KCR mulls lifting cap on farm loan waiver

June 11, 2014 12:37 am | Updated April 17, 2017 06:37 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao is said to be mulling lifting the cap on the time-frame fixed for the farm loan waiver.

Days after an uproar was created with parties faulting the government to restrict the waiver only to one year, the Chief Minister is understood to have dropped hints that there could be further relief to the farmers. The TRS election manifesto had promised to waive crop loans up to Rs. 1 lakh. Subsequently, it came out with a statement that loans taken in 2013 and 2014 alone would be waived. Sources in the government said the TRS was determined to honour its electoral commitment of waiving farm loans without any time-frame.

The move apparently comes at a time, when the opposition parties are gearing to corner the TRS government on fixing a cap on farm loans. A series of protests had rocked parts of Telangana with farmers raising objections to the time-frame.

Mr. Rao is unlikely to immediately make an official announcement on the floor of the House. A formal decision could be taken once the Assembly session concludes on Friday.
