Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Monday held policies of the previous Congress and TDP governments in the combined Andhra Pradesh responsible for power problems of not only Telanagana, but also AP.
Making a statement on power position in the Assembly with the help of statistics, he said there was a demand-supply gap of over 500 MW for Telangana and over 200 MW for AP. He offered to lead an all-party delegation to the Prime Minister after the House adopted a resolution on the issue and asked the political parties to cooperate for a unanimous resolution.
He explained that the CWC records speak for themselves on how guidelines on maintaining water level in Srisailam were violated every year since 1996 when N. Chandrababu Naidu was the Chief Minister. There were occasions when the MDDL of Srisailam was taken down to even 762 feet. The State government had plans for setting up generation capacity of 6,000 MW with an estimated Rs. 40,000 crore.
Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao explained how Mr. Naidu’s visionless PPAs with gas-based power companies have been making the AP/TS governments cough up for 2,765 MW installed capacity while getting only 288 MW practically. Similarly, against the capacity of 8,595 MW thermal power the actual generation was only 6,876 MW. The hydel situation was even worse due to poor monsoon this year as only 400 MW was available now against the capacity of over 3,800 MW, he noted. He alleged that the previous N. Kiran Kumar Reddy government had neglected the repeated pleas of TRS to buy slot in Solapur-Raichur grid connecting north to south and the entire slot of about 1,750 MW was bought by Tamil Nadu. With such a scenario in the background, Mr Naidu had been using all his influence with the Centre to put Telangana into deeper trouble with regard to power supply, he alleged.
On purchase of power from Chhattisgarh, the Chief Minister said restoration of an existing line of 250 KV from that State till Kunta and expansion of its capacity was required to evict 1,000 MW from there. The State was not getting its share of power from Sileru and Krishnapatnam due to the deceiving attitude of AP in addition to scrapping some PPAs.
