The Municipal Corporation of Karimnagar (MCK) has embarked on an ambitious task of building vermicompost units in apartments to reduce the rate of garbage being tossed into the dumpyard, and to be used for organically growing vegetables and flowering plants at home.
Construction on the first such unit began at Sri Enclave apartment in 48th municipal division in Karimnagar town on Sunday. Mayor S. Ravinder Singh, along with the residents of the apartment, performed the ground-breaking ceremony for the compost pit as well as a rainwater percolation tank to recharge the ground water table.
Speaking to The Hindu , Mayor Ravinder Singh said the vermicompost generated would be used for growing vegetables and other plants within the premises, and also be sold or donated to the farming community to reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizers. Instructing all apartment associations in the town to opt for construction of vermicompost and rain water harvesting structures, Mr. Singh said the MCK would extend all financial help for the purpose. He also assured the apartment residents that the vermicompost units would not emanate any foul smell, and that the income generated through vermicomposting could be used for the maintenance of the apartments. The Mayor asserted that the decision to convert garbage into vermicompost would reduce burden on the maintenance of the garbage yards. Karimnagar town covers over 100 apartments.
