The TRS on Saturday suffered a set back in Asifabad major gram panchayat where daughter of local MLA Kova Laxmi, supported by the party, was defeated in the sarpanch election by her rival candidate put up jointly by the Congress and TDP.
Marsakolla Saraswati, incidentally sister of Ms. Laxmi, won by a margin of nearly 3,000 votes over Kova Aruna in an election which saw 8,731 voters, of a total of 14,278, casting their votes. Ms. Saraswati win, who had lost the last Assembly election as TDP candidate to Ms. Laxmi, was a foregone conclusion given the anti-incumbency wave sweeping Asifabad constituency. The MLA is accused of having become arrogant and putting up her daughter as a candidate instead of someone more deserving from the party. Elsewhere, the TRS put up a good show as candidates supported by it won in the remaining five gram panchayats where election to the sarpanch posts were held. Elections were held for the gram panchayats of Kobbai and Bedoda in Bela mandal, Sawapur in Jainad, Chondi in Kubeer and Kannala in Bellampalli.
