An Intermediate student of the Tribal Welfare Residential Junior College at Kinnerasani drowned in an irrigation canal near the institution in Palvancha mandal on Friday night.

The incident came to light on Saturday morning after the body of the deceased surfaced in the canal near the Kinnerasani dam.

The police identified the deceased as Vasanth Kumar, 17, of a tribal habitation under Narasimhasagar gram panchayat of Sujathnagar mandal.

Sources said Vasanth had reportedly gone to the irrigation canal situated close to the college late on Friday night to answer nature’s call. He reportedly slipped into the canal and drowned, sources added.

On receipt of the news, family members and relatives of the boy rushed to Kinnerasani on Saturday afternoon.

The grief-stricken relatives said dereliction of duty on the part of the supervisory staff of the residential school was to blame for the tragedy.

The Palvancha rural police registered a case.
