An Intermediate first year girl student of a Manuguru-based private junior college tried to commit suicide on Tuesday night unable to bear the purported sexual harassment by a lecturer of the same college.

The incident triggered strong protests in Manuguru on Wednesday. According to sources, the student of Aswapuram mandal consumed pesticide at her house late in the night. She was shifted to a private hospital in Bhadrachalam the same night and her condition is stated to be stable.

On receipt of the news, the relatives of the girl and some student activists staged a dharna in front of the private college in Manuguru seeking action against the lecturer. They accused the lecturer of misbehaving with the girl in a moving bus in full public view on Tuesday. The Aswapuram police registered a case against Raja Rao, the lecturer of the private college, on the charge of sexual harassment.
