In case of mistakes on DS-160 form, new form should be filled

August 31, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 29, 2016 06:13 pm IST

I submitted DS-160 form to attend a B1 visa interview. I realised that I mistakenly gave my name in the column meant for my father’s name. I also gave the address wrong in the “where do you stay?” column. How can I make the changes in the DS-160 form as I couldn’t modify it? Can the data be edited during the interview?

Bala

You will need to fill a new DS-160 form with the correct information before scheduling your appointment.

The F1 visa of my student expires in 2019. The SEVIS number on his existing F-1 visa is from Midwestern State University. He is now transferred to Bowie State University (BSU). Can he receive a new F-1 visa in his passport with the new SEVIS number from BSU? My student will travel to India in either August or December, 2015. Can he visit the Hyderabad Consulate to get the new visa stamp in his passport reflecting his current SEVIS number from BSU?

Robert Batten

You are required to apply for a new visa when transferring to a new university. When you return to India during your school break, please make a visa appointment with your new I-20. Applicants can attend their visa interviews at any of the four Consulates or the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi. Please visit our website www.ustraveldocs.com/in for more information on scheduling your visa appointment.

I got admission into two U.S. universities in fall, 2015. One university has sent me I-20 and the second university is yet to send an I-20. Can I book visa interview slot with the I-20 that I have already received? If I receive the second I-20 at the time of the interview, can I change to the new university?

Ratnaji

You should only schedule your visa interview when you receive the I-20 of the university where you plan on attending.

You cannot change the SEVIS information in your DS-160 form after your visa interview is scheduled.

I did a safety engineering course from the National Institute of Fire and Safety Engineering. The institution is not affiliated to any government or private university. The certificate issued by the institute is not valid to go abroad. I am planning to do an international certification course from Germany. Will this certificate be valid to go to the U.S.?

Brahmananda Reddy. K

You will need to verify with the advisors from the certification course in Germany to determine whether or not that course will be valid in the U.S. In addition, you will also need to check the specific requirements of the programme you wish to join to determine if they accept international courses. My wife and I were issued B1/B2 visas valid until December 2016 from Mumbai Consulate. We moved to Andhra Pradesh and obtained new passports in 2008. What is the procedure to renew our visas? Can we opt for drop box facility without attending the interview? How early should we apply for renewal before visas expire?

Mudunuri Girija Devi

You are permitted to travel to the United States up until the day your visa expires. That said, you can choose to renew your visa at any time before it expires. We encourage those who have held visas before to take advantage of the Interview Waiver Programme (IWP). To learn more about the IWP, please visit our website at http://www.ustraveldocs.com/in/in-niv-visarenew.asp . If you do not qualify for the IWP, you will need to schedule an appointment through our online system.

I am in the U.S. on a J1 visa, working as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. My J1 visa is valid until October 2015 and DS-2019 until October 2016. I plan to travel to India in August 2015 for a week. Can I renew my J1 visa before it expires?

You can renew your visa before the visa expiration date. Please check our website http://www.ustraveldocs.
