Weathermen have warned of heavy rain and thunderstorm across the State on Friday following widespread rainfall on Thursday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heavy rain alert on Thursday for Friday, after several parts of the State received moderate rainfall, much of it concentrated in the GHMC area.

Keesara, on the city outskirts, received the maximum rainfall of 9.8 cm as per the reports received late on Thursday evening.

Moderate rainfall in the city caused water stagnation and logging at several places, prompting GHMC teams to jump to action. The civic body has also asked its officials to be on the field for emergency operations in view of heavy rain anticipated on Thursday.

Maximum rainfall of 6 cm in the GHMC area was recorded at Pashamylaram, close to Patancheruvu. Ramachandrapuram in the vicinity recorded 5.5 cm. Other areas, including Musheerabad, Kapra, Mondamarket, Moula Ali, Malkajigiri and Narayanguda received moderate rainfall.

The GHMC had pressed its relief teams into action to clear water at Banjara road no. 12 junction, under the railway bridges at a few places, including Lingampally, besides deploying heavy equipment at Patancheruvu. Water-clearing activity was also taken up at Santosh Nagar, Falaknuma and Talabchanchalam in the south of the city.

IMD Director-in-Charge at Hyderabad, Y.K. Reddy, said rain over the next 48 hours can be attributed to a weather system hanging over north-coastal Andhra Pradesh.

“An upper air circulation over north coastal A.P. and southern Odisha is expected to bring rain. This system has stayed put without moving. Rainfall is expected to reduce gradually after two days,” Dr. Reddy said.

Latest rainfall statistics for Telangana indicates that State’s monsoon rainfall receipts would remain in the negative despite heavy rain in the remaining two days of the month.

“Rain over the next two days may at most reduce the deficiency by two%,” Dr. Reddy added.
