The Government-funded modern abattoir at Chengicherla has become a haven for “illegal slaughtering” of bovines and calves for “unauthorised” exports even as the price of mutton in the capital and the entire Telangana State have shot up beyond the reach of the common man, charged Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Legislature Party Leader G. Kishan Reddy on Wednesday.
“All the hygiene and cleanliness standards are being ignored in the modern slaughter house with the GHMC and other Government agencies looking the other way to the several illegal activities there.
This is despite manual slaughtering taking place and more than the sanctioned capacity slaughtering everyday,” he charged. Addressing a press conference at the State party office, Mr. Reddy said while the sanctioned permit was for slaughter of 400 buffaloes and oxen daily at the abattoir, more than 8,000 animals including calves, sheep and goat were being put under the axe. The water treatment plant was not functioning for quite sometime now and it is resulting in the groundwater getting polluted in the environs of the 70-acre facility.
Several letters written to the GHMC and other departments concerned has not elicited any response, the BJP leader claimed, accusing the “beef mafia” at work. Though the abattoir was funded by the Government with expensive imported machinery from Australia it has been given on sub-lease to a private party leading to loss of revenue to the exchequer.
Mr. Reddy saw a wider conspiracy in the bovines slaughter by this plant and two others belonging to the private sector .
