Police confronting BJP activists for trying to hoist the tricolour at public offices in Adilabad.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made a spirited effort to hoist the National flag from government offices in Adilabad district, while the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), the Congress and the Communist Party of India kept the Hyderabad Liberation Day celebrations at a subdued level in Adilabad on Wednesday.

The BJP and Congress at Luxettipet tried to hoist the tricolour at the Tahsildar’s office while the former made a failed attempt to hoist the National flag at the district Collectorate though a couple of its activists managed to break the police cordon and reached the top of the building.

The BJP celebrated the day as Telangana Vimochana Diwas while the TRS celebrated it as Telangana Vileenam Diwas with its leaders unfurling party flag at party offices. The CPI also unfurled party flags at its offices in Asifabad and some other places in the coal belt.

Low key in Medak

Sangareddy Staff Reporter adds: All major political parties confined to their respective party offices in holding the liberation day celebrations. BJP, and CPI hoisted the national flag at their party offices. Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC) held the programme at Telangana Talli statue.

Leaders arrested

Nizamabad Special Correspondent adds: The BJP leaders including Uppal legislator N.V.V.S Prabhakar and the party district president Palle Ganga Reddy were among those who were arrested by the police when they, along with the party cadres, tried to hoist the national flag at Police Parade Ground, here on Wednesday.

In view of the event the police machinery arranged high security before the Collectorate, parade ground, District Police Office and other Government offices. Yet the ABVP, TGVP and the BJP cadres could hoist the national flag on Tahsil and Mandal Praja Parishad Offices at some mandal and division centres.

Protesting the removal of national flag after it was hoisted on the Tahsil office at Navipet the TGVP activists staged a rasta roko, while the BJP workers breaking the police cordon hoisted the flag at Gandhi Chowrasta at Madnur mandal headquarters. Students formed human chain at some places on the occasion. The TNGOs’ Association, the JAC and the CPI celebrated the day at their offices here.

Mr. Prabhakar who was shifted to fifth town police station meanwhile talking to The Hindu described the Government’s action as “unconstitutional” and “undemocratic”. Accusing the TRS Government of being afraid of Muslim minorities not celebrating the day officially, he wanted to know why there was an objection for the TRS when it was being observed in Karnataka and Maharashtra.

‘Vote bank politics’’

Khammam Staff Reporter adds: The one town police have detained several BJP activists including the party district president K Sridhar Reddy when the latter tried to gatecrash into the Collectorate.Former MLA Chanda Lingaiah Dora was among those who took part in the stir.

Activists owing allegiance to the BJP’s Mahila Morcha, Girijana Morcha and other frontal organisations took out a rally in the town later in the day.

In a separate programme, the CPI senior leaders including former MLAs Puvvada Nageswara Rao and K Sambasiva Rao paid tributes to the martyrs of the Telangana Peasants’ Armed Struggle at a meeting held here.Addressing the meeting, the speakers said the valiant struggle spearheaded by oppressed masses under the aegis of the Communists against the autocratic Nizam rule in the late 1940s led to the liberation of the State from the clutches of the dictatorial regime. The people of Telangana achieved statehood by drawing inspiration from the historical struggle, they said.

Arrests in Karimnagar

Karimnagar Special Correspondent adds: The celebrations were marked by stray incidents of scuffle between the police and BJP, CPI and ABVP activists when the latter tried to hoist national flag at police parade grounds and Collectorate office premises here.

The ABVP activists came in a procession from Telangana chowk to the Collectorate. However, the police forces obstructed their movement into the Collectorate premises. In the melee, the ABVP activists hoisted the national flag on the road and sang the national anthem. Later, the CPI activists have arrived in large numbers to enter the Collectorate premises. But, the police foiled their attempts with the arrest of local leaders.

Several BJP and CPI activists were arrested in various parts of the district.

Huge rallies in Warangal

Warangal Special Correspondent adds: Scores of BJP workers took out a massive rally raising slogans against the Nizam and hailing the martyrs who went down fighting the Nizam army. They shouted slogans against the TRS government which refused to celebrate the event. They staged a demonstration squatting on the main thoroughfare. Earlier, a demonstration and meeting was held at Martyrs Memorial in which the party district president A Ashok Reddy, former MLA M Dharma Rao, the party State vice-president G Premender Reddy, senior leaders Rau Padma, S Muralimanohar, D Devender Reddy, Ch Sunil and others took part. Addressing the gathering, they took strong objection to TRS government for not celebrating the event. The Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao who made tall claims on Telangana pride and wanted to celebrate the liberation day some time back was now neglecting it, they pointed out. The chief minister was acting under pressure from Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) party and fearing that announcing the liberation day as a state function might antagonise the Muslim voters, they alleged.

The CPI and Congress parties celebrated the liberation day at their respective offices by hoisting the national flag here on Wednesday. At the CPI office, party district secretary T Srinivas Rao and other leaders recalled the sacrifices made by scores of people across the Telangana who went down fighting the tyrannical Nizam army. At the Congress party office, DCC president N Rajender Reddy and others hoisted the national flag. They paid rich tributes to those who fought against the Nizam army to liberate the Telangana.

Nalgonda Staff Reporter adds: Different organisations in Nalgonda district organised a protests marking the day as Vidhroha Dinam and they have also taken out a rally.

The TRS and TJAC have observed the day as Vileena Dinam by hoisting the national flags. The BJP, TDP district unit observed the day as Vimochana Dinam. CPI (M) New Democracy also observed the day as Vidhroha Dinam.
