Heavy rains flood many parts in Twin Cities

City witnessed another severe spell of rain late on Thursday, flooding many areas. Weathermen have warned of more rains in the next 48 hours.

Heavy spell of rain that began three days ago due to low-pressure conditions over coastal Andhra Pradesh continued on Thursday.

Moula Ali, located in north-eastern Hyderabad received around 22 cm in the last 24 hours. India Meteorological Department located at Begumpet recorded five centimetres of rain since Thursday 8.30 p.m.

“A heavy rainfall alert has been issued for the next 24 hours. Low-pressure conditions now exist over northern Telangana,” an IMD meteorologist said. “Another low-pressure weather system is forming in the Bay of Bengal.”

The state government had declared a two-day school holiday for Thursday and Friday but reports of schools not heeding came from several areas of the city. The State had also advised IT and ITES companies to let employees work from home these two days.

An unoccupied house collapsed in Aghapura without causing injuries. GHMC alerted residents of dilapidated buildings to vacate and take shelter in higher areas. Flooding and water-logging was witnessed in all parts of the city, affecting office-goers for the third consecutive day.

The situation was somewhat grim in Alwal area as three major tanks were filled up and excess was entering the nearby colonies. Rain water continued to inundate Reddy Enclave in Alwal for the third consecutive day. The excess water from three tanks in Alwal joined the Hashtmathpet lake compounding the woes of the local residents.

Hussain Sagar water level continued to remain above the lake’s Full Tank Level of 513.41 meters despite water being let out. Officials informed that the inflow of 5,500 cusecs was higher than the outflow.

Municipal Administration Minister K.T.Rama Rao on Friday reviewed the rain situation with senior GHMC and other officials. He said that 80 per cent of the tanks and lakes in and around the City were filled to the brim. He asked the officials to map the rain hit areas and accordingly take up remedial measures. Mr. Rao asked the police personnel to participate in flood relief work.
