Heatwave mitigation initiative at SCCL mines

With temperatures soaring above 40 degrees Celsius in most parts of the coal belt region, the management of the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) has intensified the heatwave mitigation measures to protect the coal miners from the heat-related health hazards particularly in the opencast mines.

The company management has launched distribution of buttermilk and ORS packets to the coal miners and other staff at the pit-heads of the coal mines across the Kothagudem region. The company has initiated a health awareness campaign to educate its workforce to follow the prescribed tips to avoid heat-related illnesses during the ensuing peak summer days.

Makeshift rest shelters with a facility to sprinkle water on wet gunny bags wrapped around the portable structures have been created at the work sites in some of the OCPs in the Kothagudem region, the SCCL sources said.

The move is intended to provide relief to the coal miners and supervisory staff from the searing heat wave conditions.
