Heat wave intensifies in Telangana; 42 more dead

Mercury touches 47ºC at several places; toll mounts to 75

The heat wave continued its intensity across Telangana, claiming at least 42 persons on Friday and taking the toll beyond 75.

The mercury touched 47°C at several places in the State, while Hyderabad recorded 43.6°C.

The Meteorological Department has forecast severe heat wave conditions at many places over the State on Saturday and Sunday too.

However, there could be some relief later as the weathermen predicted isolated rain or thundershowers at some places across Telangana on May 25 and 26.

Temperatures of 47 degrees were recorded at Khammam, Nalgonda, Nizamabad and Ramagundam, with many other places suffering heat ranging between 42 and 46 degrees.

Reports from districts indicated that the death toll was rising as the heat wave continued unabated, though the temperatures were down by a shade compared to Thursday.

At least nine deaths due to sunstroke were reported in Medak district on Friday.

The district headquarters town of Sangareddy recorded 43 degrees.

A report from Warangal said five died of sunstroke including Venkanna (58), who runs a petty shop, at Narsampet, A. Hanumaiah (83) at Palakurthy, Yadaiah (58) of Gudur and Sammakka (65) at Mangapet.

The temperature at Hanamkonda stood at 45 degrees with forecast of further rise in the next few days.

Karimnagar district reported six deaths due to heat wave conditions and a dozen deaths were reported from Khammam, besides leaving scores of others hospitalised due to sunstroke. Senior citizens accounted for nearly half the total casualties.

As many as 10 persons succumbed to the heat wave conditions in Nalgonda district on Friday as the death toll in the district crossed 25 during the last five days.

A 62-year-old woman S. Pentamma died at K. Rayingudem after suffering a sunstroke in the morning. She had collapsed due to dehydration.

Similarly, a sanitation worker at Kodad Municipality, Kampati Mangamma, also died of sunstroke.

The administration of Sri Lakshminarasimha Swamy Temple at Yadagirigutta erected shamiana s on the hill shrine but the sun god did not spare them from a tough time.
