In an effort to promote greenery in Khammam Municipal Corporation limits, the Horticulture wing of the civic body has mooted an ambitious plan to beautify as many as 14 parks and an equal number of traffic islands by plantings saplings mainly, flowering plants.

The plan has been conceived as part of the Telangana government’s ‘Haritha Haram’ scheme aimed at spreading the green cover and creating a lung space for denizens of the fast growing town.

The move has also gained significance in the backdrop of the ongoing felling of trees on several important stretches of the main roads in the town for the proposed road-widening works.

The greenery initiative is expected to compensate the loss of tree cover in the long run to some extent, sources said.

The plan envisages beautification of a total of 14 parks, including the municipal park at the municipal corporation office, P. V. Narasimha Rao Park at Burhanpuram, Jamalapuram Kesava Rao Park at Zaheerpura, Cheruvubanda Park and Jammibanda park spread in 50 divisions under the corporation limits.

Facelift for municipal parks

The greenery initiative is likely to give a face-lift to the municipal parks, most of which are poorly maintained in the town.

The traffic islands housing statues of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Vivekananda, NTR, Sri Sri and Telangana Thalli among others are poised for beautification.

Plans are afoot to develop greenery on five central medians by laying expansive lawns under the corporation limits, sources added.

“We have sent proposals for development of greenery and beautification of the parks, traffic islands and road dividers under the corporation limits, said J. Marianna, Horticulture Officer, Horticulture Wing, Khammam Municipal Corporation.

It is proposed to grow a large number of medicinal plants such as Ashwagandha, Addasaram and Nalleru at various places under the corporation limits in association with the Forest Department, he said.
