A marriage trip to Medak from Hyderabad turned tragic for five persons, including two children, as they drowned in a lake where they went for a splash to beat the heat on Sunday.

The incident took place around noon at Kannaram village in Kowdipally mandal of Medak, police said.

The victims were identified as Mohammed Khaja Imtiyaz (40), Mohammed Asif (28), Huda (18), Mohammed Anas (06) and Mohamed Ahnana (05), residents of Mustaipur and Talab Katta in Hyderabad.

Police said that a group of eight members visited Pedda Cheruvu adjacent to the village and five of them drowned in the lake. Initially, three persons drowned in the water and, hearing their alarm, two others — Imtiyaz and Asif — entered the lake to rescue them.

In the process, they too met watery grave. “Three of them who were taking bath near the bank were saved by villagers,” police said. Those on the bank screamed for help as their family members were drowning in front of their eyes and by the time villagers arrived, all the five had drowned. Police, with the help of locals, retrieved and shifted the bodies to the government hospital at Narsapur for autopsy. Later in the evening, the bodies were handed over to family members, who brought them back to Hyderabad.
