In two incidents that took place on Sunday, five children drowned — two in an irrigation canal in Khammam and three in a well in Sangareddy district. Of them, three bodies were retrieved.

Tragedy struck a labourer’s family when his daughter and son accidentally drowned in an irrigation canal at Rajeevnagargutta locality under Khammam urban police station limits on Sunday.

The deceased were identified as M Manasa, 6, and her brother Manoj, 4, children of M Shankar, a labourer of Rajeevnagargutta area in Khammam Municipal Corporation limits.

The duo reportedly slipped into the NSP canal situated close to their house while playing on the banks of the canal in the afternoon.

The sister-brother duo instantly drowned, sources said.

Their bodies were fished out from the irrigation canal by the police later in the day.

The tragic incident came barely 10 days after a similar incident in which a sister-brother duo of Polepalli drowned in Munneru rivulet in the town.

Drown in well

While three children were suspected to have drowned in an old well at Kottur (K) village in Kohir mandal of Sangareddy district on Sunday, the body of one child was recovered.

According to sources, three children — Shiva Kumar (13), Praveen (10) and Avinash (8) — went to the fields grazing cattle as Sunday was a holiday.

While playing, they made a Ganesh idol and tried to immerse it in an old well which was filled with water owing to recent rains. While immersing the idol, they reportedly slipped into the well, the police said.

The Kohir police said they retrieved the body of Avinash and were searching for the other two.

A case was registered.
