‘FAST only in name’

November 14, 2014 01:08 am | Updated 01:08 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Congress MLA G. Chinna Reddy urged the government not to scrap the fee reimbursement scheme as it had helped many poor and underprivileged students to acquire professional education.

Mr. Reddy, along with his party colleague Bhaskar Rao, said on Thursday that about 15 lakh students were yet to get their reimbursement from the government in Telangana. The government had spent Rs.4,500 crore for the scheme in the united State during the previous year. Of this, Rs.2,091 crore was spent on 14.3 lakh students in Telangana region. This year, assuming that the total number of students in the State will rise to 15 lakh, about Rs.2,500 crore will have to be spent, Mr. Reddy noted. “So far, only Rs.500 crore has been released for SC, ST, OBC, and minority students,” Mr. Reddy stated.

College managements are asking students not to come to the college till the fee is paid, he alleged. “It is named FAST, but the implementation is slow,” he quipped.
