The 71st Independence Day was celebrated with gaiety and fervour across both the districts of Nizamabad and Kamareddy.

Agriculture Minister Pocharam Srinivas Reddy hoisted the tri-colour National Flag on the Police Parade Grounds here while Government Whip G. Govardhan unfurled the flag at Indira Gandhi Stadium in Kamareddy.

Zilla Parishad Chairman D. Raju, Mayor Akula Sujatha, MLCs, MLAs and other elected representatives, Collector Ms. Yogitha Rana, Joint Collector A. Ravinder Reddy, Commissioner of Police Kartikeya, freedom fighters, officials and non-officials participated in the celebrations here.

Member of Parliament from Zaheerabad B.B. Patil, Jukkal MLA Hanmanth Shinde, Collector N. Satyanarayana, Joint Collector S. Sathaiah, Superintendent of Police N. Swetha, DCMS chairman Muzeeb and municipal chairperson P. Sushma were among those who attended the celebrations in Kamareddy.

In his address later Srinivas Reddy said the Government was committed to support farmers and in the event of the borewells drying up in the Nizam Sagar ayacut the Government would come to their rescue by releasing water from Singur. Drinking water from Godavari would be supplied to every household through the Mission Bhagiratha in next six months, he added.

Listing out various welfare and development schemes of the Government, Govardhan said that for Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao farmers’ welfare was top priority. Hence, KCR designed so many new irrigation projects, he added.

Telangana University Vice-Chancellor P. Sambaiah, Principal District and Sessions Judge K. Sujana and Joint Collector Ravinder Reddy hoisted the flag at TU campus, District Court Complex and Collectorate respectively.
