Farmers block road demanding Sagar water release

February 23, 2015 05:31 pm | Updated 05:31 pm IST - KHAMMAM:

Farmers from Kotha Kothuru and its adjoining villages blocked the Khammam-Kodad main road at Kotha Kothuru in Nelakondapalli mandal on Monday demanding release of water from Palair balancing reservoir to protect their standing crops.

Ayacutdars from Kotha Kothuru, Tirumalapuram Tanda, Patha Kothuru and a few other villages under the Nagarjunasagar Project (NSP) left canal system resorted to a road blockade near Kotha Kothuru in the afternoon, sources said.

They squatted on the main road in a symbolic protest against the alleged non-release of water from Palair reservoir in Kusumanchi mandal to their ayacut areas at a crucial time when water was urgently required to sustain the standing crops.

They threatened to undertake a more vigorous agitation if their demand was not conceded. They called off their protest half-an-hour later following the intervention of the mandal level officials concerned.
