Having worked as Additional SP in Ongole, SP (Railways) and SP in Kurnool district in the erstwhile unified State of Andhra Pradesh, S. Chandrashekar Reddy, has been posted as SP in the district.

Ever since he assumed charge in Nizamabad towards the end of September, Mr. Reddy, who belongs to the 1994 batch of Group-I cadre and was conferred IPS in 2011, embarked upon introducing reforms for good policing.

Known as a polite and people-friendly officer, he spoke to P. RAM MOHAN . Here are some excerpts:

What are your priorities in your efforts to implement good policing?

Maintenance of law and order, preservation of peace and harmony, prevention of property offences, road accidents, atrocities on women and men’s welfare.

What are the pre-requisites for good policing?

Infrastructure and sufficient number of personnel. Some 12 police stations badly require vehicles. All police stations are going to be given at least one four-wheeler and two to four two-wheelers. Over 300 constable posts remain vacant and they need to be filled immediately for effective policing.

Road accidents have been on the rise. What steps are being taken to prevent them?

Two National Highways (NH 44 and NH 63) pass through the district. Ensuring road safety is my topmost priority as more or less 500 deaths occurred in accidents last year, which is higher than what happened in a big district like Kurnool. One-third accidents are taking place due to drunken driving and negligence of drivers.

Traffic snarls have become common in the district headquarters town, do you agree?

That’s true. There are certain bottlenecks and road blocks on Bodhan road, Khaleelwadi, Armoor road and Phulong chowrasta. Roads must be widened at some places and traffic sense needs to be inculcated among vehicle users.

CCTV cameras are not functioning in the town. Why has the police remained silent on the issue?

I talked to the persons concerned immediately after I came to know about the problem. Everything is in place and restoration of cable at some places and giving connection is the immediate need. That will be done soon.
