Superintendent of Police P. Vishwa Prasad has appealed to parents and teachers to enlighten their children on the ills of drug use on their physical and mental health and also to the society.

Children were increasingly becoming addicted to the drugs and intoxicants at a young age, he said and opined that illiteracy of parents and poverty drove them to consume drugs.

He released pamphlets on this issue brought out by Akula Dharmabai Charitable Trust and Sasi Association for Integrated Development, here on Sunday.

Government Medical College neuro psychiatry assistant professor A. Vishal, said that this day every year as per the United Nations resolution International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was being observed to create awareness on the ill-effects of drugs.

Many youth in the district got addicted to alcohol, gutka, cigarette, beedi, adulterated toddy and also ganja resulting in socio economic problems, he observed.

Alcoholism and other drug habits of parents would create desire among children to taste them and therefore the parents should not take the intoxicants in front of their children, he advised them and appealed to them to give up the habit in the interest of their children.

Additional SP R. Pratap Reddy, Deputy SP D. Anand Kumar and others were present.
