Despite the police, the civic body and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) making efforts for the past 18 hours to rescue her, 14-month-old Chinnari remains stuck in an abandoned borewell at Chevella town, 60 km away from Hyderabad.
The girl is alive and waving her hand now and then from the 37-foot borewell, according to rescue personnel.
“Since no pipe was fixed inside the borewell, we could not send a person inside. If we send anyone, there is danger of mud collapsing and he getting stuck,” NDRF Assistant Commandant D.N. Singh said.
The NDRF tried sending a Borewell Rescue Robot inside. “But the robot could not hold the baby properly. We could catch the baby’s hand using the robot but it repeatedly slipped from the robot,” Mr. Singh said.
The police, on their part, are tried to bring out the girl by pulling up the submersible water motor, which was located a few feet below the girl. “The idea was that the girl would also come up along with the motor,” they said. However, this attempt failed as the motor came up but not the kid.
Simultaneously, the soil was being dug using earth moving machines but not much headway could be made as huge rocks surfaced within 20 feet deep. But the digging continued.
State Transport Minister Mahender Reddy and Cyberabad Police Commissioner Sandeep Shandilya are supervising the rescue operation.
