Hectic efforts are under way to plug the breach in the left canal of Nagarjunasagar Project (NSP) at 133.56 km point near Ramachandrapuram aqueduct on Khammam-Nalgonda border.

A three-metre-wide breach was developed on the outer slope of the canal embankment two days ago. The site where the cavity was formed is situated between Eshwaramadharam in Kusumanchi mandal of Khammam district and Ramachandrapuram in Nadigudem mandal of Nalgonda district, sources added.

The NSP authorities, subsequently, stalled the release of water from the head regulator at NSP in Nalgonda district into the canal to facilitate repair works.

The breach has reportedly hit water supply to the ayacut areas under NSP second zone spread in Khammam district and third zone in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh.

Meanwhile, the NSP engineers on Saturday pressed into service earth moving machinery, including hydraulic excavators, to expeditiously carryout the repair works.

The repair works to fill the breach are being carried out on a war-footing, said V. Sudhakar, Superintending Engineer, NSP, Tekulapalli Circle, Khammam district.

The works are likely to be completed in two days, he said, adding that water supply to the second and third zones under the NSP left canal system will be resumed soon after restoring the bund.
