The verdict from among most chest physicians is loud and clear – modern living, rising levels of pollution, exposure to allergens, stress and smoking are prime reasons for the rising asthma cases, at least in Hyderabad.

However, unlike those suffering from other chronic ailments like diabetes and hypertension, asthma patients need not compromise on their lifestyle and dietary habits. Thanks to newer medicines and drug delivery systems, by and large asthma patients can lead an active and normal life because it can be kept under control.

Asthma is an inflammatory disorder of the airways of the lungs that leads to wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness and cough, particularly at night and early in the morning. It causes airways of the lungs to narrow, leading to complications. As an analogy, physicians compare the airways to that of the leaves of Touch Me Not plant ( Mimosa pudica ).

“The moment one touches the leaves of this plant, they immediately react to the touch and shrink. Airways to lungs react similarly to allergens. They simply constrict and disrupt breathing. Exposure to allergens like pollen grains is very detrimental to children and parents should always be wary about that,” says professor of pulmonary medicine at Osmania Medical College Subhakar Kandi.

Almost all asthma specialists advise use of inhalers towards management of asthma.

“Controller drugs reduce the symptoms, prevent attacks and help one lead good quality life. However, in case there is a massive attack, there are reliever medicines available, which once inhaled will provide rapid relief. Such specialised drugs act for a maximum of four to six hours,” Dr. Subhakar says.

Allergens are prime agents for triggering asthma attacks.

“Early mornings and evenings in Hyderabad are full of dust motes and mites that trigger asthma seizures. It is better that children with history of asthma do not to venture out during early hours. There is a definite lack of awareness about asthma because simple precautions are enough for management,” says allergy specialist and CEO, Allergy and Asthma Network of India, Vyakarnam Nageshwar.

Doctors admit there are myths surrounding asthma.

“Patients are most often misinformed about the treatment. Inhalers cause minimal side effects, but it is not propagated as much,” doctors lament.
