Tension prevailed for some time at the District Education Officer’s (DEO) office here on Wednesday when some All India Students’ Federation and Communist Party of India activists held protest and ransacked the furniture. The police had to intervene and arrest the agitators.

According to sources, the CPI activists had submitted a memorandum in the past urging the authorities to intervene and see that the enhanced fees in private schools should be reduced. Despite repeated appeals the officials had not responded and the schools were collecting large amounts as fee, they said.

The activists held dharna in front of the DEO office and some of them entered the office premises and damaged the furniture. Police intervened and arrested 11 activists including Manda Pawan, the CPI leader who led the agitators.
