The first incident of a cotton farmer committing suicide came to light on Tuesday from Indervelli mandal of Adilabad district. Mane Kishan Prasad, a 64-year-old farmer from Shankarguda village consumed poison early in the day apparently perturbed over failure of cotton seeds germinating owing to the continuing dry spell.

Kishan Prasad had sown 13 packets of seeds in his 13 acres of land at the start of monsoon in early June. Seeds from only three packets germinated while the rest failed. The farmer visited his field early on Tuesday and found the seeds to have decayed and eaten away by rats. Disturbed over the development, he consumed poison.

His family discovered him lying unconscious in the field and shifted him to the RIMS hospital, Adilabad. He died there while undergoing treatment.
