Contractors to be accountable for upkeep of rural roads

The government of Telangana has decided to reduce the time limit for execution of road works and to make the contractors responsible for maintenance of roads for a period of five years after the completion of work.

Denial of works to black-listed contractors, treating mandal as a unit for renewal of black-top (BT) roads and laying of rural roads with the Indian Roads Congress standards were among other decisions taken at a review meeting held here on Saturday. Minister for Panchayat Raj and Rural Development K.T. Rama Rao, Minister for Transport P. Mahender Reddy and officials participated.

Stating that the government had taken strengthening of the rural road network as a priority issue, Mr. Rama Rao said linking every village with motorable road was their objective. The government would soon set up Rural Roads Development Corporation for the purpose and the engineering and other wings of the Panchayat Raj Department would be combined into one. Reducing the time limit for execution of road works and treating mandal as a unit for renewal of black-top roads would help supervision of quality property, the Minister noted.

Mr. Rama Rao said pending bills to the tune of Rs. 153 crore were released recently and the rest would be cleared soon. He asked the officials to ensure laying of all rural roads, including the gravel roads, by May next. He announced sanction of Rs. 220 crore for rural roads in Ranga Reddy, stating that it was the gateway to other districts in the State.
