The District Congress Committee leaders staged dharnas and rasta rokos in various parts of Karimnagar district on Friday to protest against the diversion of Sripada Yellampalli project (SYP) water to Medak district and Hyderabad city without meeting the requirement of farmers in Karimnagar district.

DCC president K. Mruthyunjayam and TPCC Women’s Wing State president Nerella Sharada, among others, participated in rasta roko on the Rajiv rahadari on the outskirts of Karimnagar town, obstructing traffic for a few minutes. However, the police swung into action and arrested the protestors and shifted them to the police station.

Similarly, former MP and TPCC vice-president Ponnam Prabhakar and TPCC spokesperson Ramya Rao staged rasta roko on the Rajiv rahadari at Nusthullapur village in Thimmapur mandal. Former Minister D. Sridhar Babu and Congress leaders Cheti Dharmaiah and Erla Komuraiah staged a dharna in Peddapalli town and obstructed the flow of traffic.

The Congress leaders alleged that the Sripada Yellampalli project pipeline was going from Ramagundam, Peddapalli, Karimnagar, Manakondur and Husnabad Assembly segments to Medak district, denying water for irrigation and drinking to the locals.

Flaying the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leaders for remaining silent when the government was siphoning off the SYP waters to Medak and Hyderabad, they demanded that the government should first provide the due to Karimnagar district and later to other parts of the State.
