Stating that over 25,000 government schools lacked toilets and more than 5,000 schools had no drinking water facility in the State, Minister for Education G. Jagadeeswar Reddy said that the Telangana government was striving to ensure basic amenities, including safe drinking water, in all schools in a few months.
Mr. Reddy was speaking at a function held here on Friday, in connection with the distribution of 3,737 dual desks and 14 Reverse Osmosis plants by the Rotary International District (3150) to over 60 government schools in ten districts of Telangana.
Khammam MP P. Srinivas Reddy, Kothagudem MLA J. Venkat Rao, Collector K. Ilambarithi and Superintendent of Police A.V. Ranganath were among those who attended the ceremony.
Hailing the generous support being extended by the Rotary service organisation to government schools, he said that community participation was imperative to strengthen the school education system.
NGOs and all sections of society should become active partners in the mission to transform Telangana into a fully literate State, as early as possible, he remarked.
He said the government had accorded top priority to strengthening infrastructure in government schools and constructing compound walls in over 10,000 schools soon.
A plan is on the anvil to appoint attenders to maintain facilities in government schools and extend support to the teaching staff, he added.
The Rotary International District (3150) District Governor Malladi Vasudev, past district governor Ravi Vadlamani, Rotary Club of Khammam district president K.S.R.K. Prasad, DEO K. Ravindranath Reddy and others were present.
