July 22, 2014 12:02 am | Updated November 28, 2021 09:27 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

Former Union Minister Ch. Vidyasagar Rao wanted the Telangana Rashtra Samithi Government declare that it would officially celebrate Sept. 17 as Liberation Day, recalling the Marathwada example where it was celebrated as Marathwada Mukti Sangram.

At a press conference here on Monday, Mr. Rao pointed out that in 12 districts - eight of Maharashtra - including Jalna, Aurangabad, Nanded, Parbani, Latur, Beed, Osmanabad and Hingoli and four in Karnataka, the day was officially celebrated as the day the people were liberated from the Nizam’s rule. He brandished copies of an official Government of Maharashtra order dated May 4, 2001, wherein it declared Sept. 19 as a general holiday and the day celebrated as Hyderabad Mukti Sangramachi Suvarna Mahotsav Divas.

He wanted similar, official celebrations in Hyderabad too, whose people got freedom the Nizam’s rule, a year and 34 days after India achieved freedom.

Meanwhile, party leader N. Ramchander referred to a recent interview published in an English daily wherein Member of Parliament Kavita made comments that were objectionable.
