An 18-year-old cattle grazer, who was accidentally injured in an exchange of fire between the security forces and the Maoists in the neighbouring Chhattisgarh six days ago, underwent an emergency surgery at a private hospital in Bhadrachalam on Tuesday morning.

Sources said Lakshmaiah sustained a bullet injury in his waist after being caught in the cross-fire between the security personnel and the rebels in the forest area in the Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh State on Wednesday.

He was found lying with a grievous injury at the incident site by the villagers several hours after the exchange of fire on the same day. The villagers gave him first aid.

When the condition of Lakshmaiah deteriorated, a group of villagers shifted him to a private hospital in Bhadrachalam with the help of some NGO activists on Monday night.

The doctors at the hospital performed an emergency operation on Lakshmaiah and removed the bullet on Tuesday morning. But his condition is stated to be critical.
