Bus yatra to protest “anti-farmer” policies

April 01, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:50 am IST - KHAMMAM:

Activists of the Telangana Vyavasaya Karmika Sangham, affiliated to the All India Agricultural Workers Union (AIAWU), will undertake a three-day bus yatra in the district to protest against the Centre’s “anti-farmer” and “anti-agricultural labourer” policies, from April 10 to 12.

Announcing this at a meeting here on Tuesday, the Karmika Sangham State general secretary B Venkat said a State-wide bus yatra christened as “Upadhi Parirakshana Yatra” will enter Khammam district on April 10. The yatra will pass through 23 mandals in the ten Assembly constituencies in the district in three-days. It will culminate in a massive public meeting in Hyderabad on April 27.

The yatra will expose the attempts by the BJP-led Central government to “dilute” the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme, he said, adding that the protest programme is intended to exert pressure on the government to safeguard livelihoods of scores of farmers and agricultural labourers. Other main demands of the Karmika Sangham include safeguarding the rights of Adivasis on "Podu lands", providing 200 days of work and Rs 300 daily wages to each worker under the MGNREGA scheme.
