Sixteen Bangladeshi nationals who had served six-month jail terms for illegally living and working in India were given into the custody of the police on Friday.
They would be taken to the Indo-Bangladesh border and handed over to the Border Security Force for repatriation to their home country.
The Bangladeshi nationals were discovered working for a rice mill in Penugonda in West Godavari district last year.
Produced in court
They had been brought here by one Sofiqul Mandal, a Bangladeshi settler in West Bengal, who had promised them jobs. Produced in court, they were awarded six months imprisonment.
Investigations by West Godavari Superintendent of Police Bhaskar Bhushan’s staff found that the illegal migrants were natives of Jessore district in Bangladesh.
This was confirmed by the Bangladesh embassy in New Delhi, and accordingly repatriation proceedings were initiated.
“Migrant labourers come mainly from Odisha and other neighbouring states but infiltration from Bangladesh is high too,” a senior police officer said.
