t’s that time of the year again when it rains and city roads take a beating, resulting in hardships for commuters. Although showers have been sparse this time, citizens are complaining and fuming at the civic authorities, saying they have done shoddy road repair works ahead of the monsoon.

“The road from Tarnaka to Habsiguda could use some work. Though traffic is not much on this stretch, vehicles slow down mainly because of some bad patches that surface after Big Bazaar,” mentioned Preethi P., who stays in Habsiguda. She added that a portion of the road had also been dug up near Little Flower School, causing inconvenience to students.

Another resident, Anindita M., said that roads at many places on the Jubilee Hills to Hi-tech city stretch were also in dire need of repair. Even after complaints, she stated that nothing had been done so far. “They repair roads some times, and even that does not last for long,” she claimed, and added that in the 10 years she had spent in Hyderabad, damaged roads during the monsoons were commonplace. Others are also unhappy with the metro rail authorities, who they say have only compounded the problem. “The Musheerabad to Secunderabad railway station main road used to be good. Now, half the road is blocked for metro works, while other places where work has been completed needs to be repaired,” pointed out Mannan Khan, a resident of Padmarao Nagar. In fact, Mannan said that it was not uncommon to see people slipping and falling off their bikes at night due to the bad roads. “Another place where I have seen that happen is the Greenlands main road,” he stated.

He added that the main road from Lakdikapul towards Mehdipatnam was also riddled with potholes, due to which nearby residents themselves were forced to fill some of them with stones. When contacted, a GHMC engineer, unwilling to be identified, said that patch works had been taken up wherever necessary, but major repairs would be carried out only after the monsoons.
