Even as the interceptor vehicles, deployed on the national and State highways to monitor the violations of road safety norms, have failed to serve the purpose, the Transport Department is planning to procure 20 new interceptor vehicles to intensify vigil on the vehicle movements.

Though equipped with breath analysers, pollution testing kits, speed laser guns and other gadgets to enforce the road safety rules, the existing vehicles are now being used for other purposes for which the officials are citing various reasons.

Except for breath analysers, most of the other gadgets in the vehicles have remained defunct since the last few years. The same has been reported to higher officials, but only experts can fix the snags. More over, they have now become outdated, says an official from Vijayawada RTO.
