AP Bar Council asked to defer meet

November 29, 2014 12:28 am | Updated May 31, 2016 07:00 am IST - HYDERABAD:

The High Court has asked the Bar Council of AP to defer its general body meeting slated to be held on Saturday in view of the interim orders on the formation of a separate Telangana Bar Council to be delivered next week. This direction was given by a division Bench comprising Chief Justice Kalyan Sen Jyothi Gupta and Justice P.V. Sanjay Kumar on Friday, on a writ appeal filed by the undivided AP Bar Council.

An advocate of Hyderabad High Court, Venkatanarayana, had filed a writ petition seeking a directive to constitute a separate Telangana Bar Council after a separate State came into existence on June 2. He challenged the proceedings issued by the Bar Council of India directing the undivided AP Bar Council to enrol law graduates and go ahead with disciplinary proceedings against the advocates.

A single judge declared that the Telangana Bar Council had in fact come into being on June 2 and the Union of India, Bar Council of India have to take steps to see that the Telangana Bar Council starts functioning. This was challenged by the AP Bar Council in the present writ appeal. It contended that till the High Court is undivided, the Bar Council cannot be separated. The Bench heard arguments and reserved its verdict on interim orders. The Bench was told that the general body of undivided AP Bar Council was scheduled to meet on Saturday to discuss this issue.
