The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has reiterated that the party would consider alliances with secular and democratic parties on the basis of policies.
CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury said the party was against forging “alliances for alliance sake” and asserted that the party would favour alliances on the basis of programmes and policies.
He recalled that Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao had spoken to him on the need for an alternative to the Congress and the BJP at the national level.
“I explained to him the efforts made by the CPI(M) since more than two decades now from the time of formation of the United Front government in 1996,” he said at the public meeting convened by the party at the conclusion of the 22nd national congress on Sunday.
He said the party would first consider the policies and programmes of those who wish to become part of the alternative and a decision on the alliances would be taken at an appropriate time.
