Agenda for Southern Zonal Council meeting finalised

Poverty alleviation, environment, rural uplift, housing, power transmission to figure at meeting

The agenda for the meeting of the Chief Ministers of the Southern Zonal Council in the coming weeks was set during deliberations of top officials of member States here on Wednesday.

It was attended by Chief Secretaries of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Additional Chief Secretary of Kerala and Advisor to the Union Home Minister.

A release said this was the eighth meeting of the standing committee of the Southern Zonal Council and facilitated by the secretary of the Inter-State Council Secretariat of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Representatives of 14 Ministries and departments of the Central government also attended the meeting.

The deliberations pertained to 64 items that could find a place at the zonal council meeting to be presided over by the Union Home Minister.

They related to poverty alleviation, environment, rural development, housing, railways, power transmission, road transport, industrial corridors, goods and service tax and tourism. The agenda was fixed after detailed scrutiny of the issues.

Significance

The release added that Wednesday’s meeting of the standing committee assumed significance in the background of the Central government’s focus on reconstitution of zonal councils and establishing cooperation between States for effective Centre-State relations.
