As it drizzled for the fourth day in succession, Adilabad district recorded over 45 per cent rainfall in excess of the normal so far in the season. Against a normal of 28.4 cm the actual rainfall recorded was 41.3 cm this year. The rainfall for the corresponding period last year was a normal of 32.1 cm.

While the average rainfall until 8 a.m. on Sunday was 7 cm, it resulted in 40 mandals of the 52 in the district record excess rainfall while the remaining recorded normal rains. Bhainsa mandal recorded the highest rainfall at about 17 cm in excess of the normal with Kubeer, Dilawarpur and Kuntala recording over 10 cm in excess.

Streams swollen

Almost all hill streams and major rivers in Adilabad were swollen thanks to the continuing drizzle on Sunday. There was some dislocation in flow of traffic in Bejjur, Chennur and Bheemini mandals owing to the streams damaging temporary bridges.

Bejjur mandal had about 20 villages cut off during the day from mandal headquarters as Kukuda, Rechini and Kushinepallivagu streams were in spate. The swollen Pranahita had the Racharla orre and Mathadi streams overflowing with its backwaters in Vemanpalli mandal.

A temporary bridge linking Bellampalli with Bheemini near Batrapalli was damaged which closed the busy road effectively. Elsewhere, the rains in Maharashtra's Chandrapur district had the Penganga swelling near Sirpur (T) cutting its link with Rajura in the neighbouring State.

Meanwhile, the coal extraction from the six open-cast mines of the Singareni Collieries remained suspended owing to water stagnating in the pit. An estimated 23,000 tonnes of coal production from these mines was lost during the day.
