The ancient Raghunatha tank, popularly known as Boddemma Cheruvu, abutting Quilla Indur, is all set to become one of the important public recreational places soon if all goes as planned under Mission Kakatiya.

The initial plan was to develop the bund on the lines of Hussainsagar for which the government had sanctioned Rs. 6.28 crore and works were launched under the second phase of the project. Work was progressing on a brisk pace and almost 80 per cent of the work related to strengthening of the bund was completed. But now, the plan is likely to be revised as the amount sanctioned initially would not be sufficient to finish all the works.

MLA Bigala Ganesh Gupta is making all efforts to get more funds for the project and would be meeting the Chief Engineer, said V. Chandan, the project contractor.

Since the tank is used for drinking water purpose, the only one sluice that exists for the tank may be removed. There is no clarity yet on that, but locals wish that it should be continued. The tank was built to serve irrigation purposes some centuries ago, but gradually, it became a drinking water source with the ayacut under it disappearing with the expansion of the city. The project supervisor, Prasad, said that within a few days, the bund work would be completed. The project envisages creating plantations along the 4.5-long bund while parks would add more beauty to it. Nizam Sagar main canal that brings water into the tank and one of the drinking water sources for the town, would also be strengthened.
