In a shocking incident, an 80-year-old woman, who commenced a fast at Mondikunta village in Aswapuram mandal on Wednesday seeking justice, after being allegedly abandoned by her five sons, died in front of the gram panchayat office, the venue of her fast, on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as K. Sarojanamma, a resident of Mondikunta.

Trust breached

She had reportedly told the villagers before commencing the fast that her five sons had taken possession of ten acres of her agricultural land after the death of her husband a couple of years ago.

Sarojanamma, who had reportedly stayed at the house of her youngest son for several months, lamented that her sons had breached her trust, before virtually throwing her into the streets.

Run from pillar to post

The woman had run from pillar to post knocking the doors of mandal revenue office in the recent past before launching the fast, sources added.

Sources said that Sarojanamma reportedly refused to eat the food offered by local villagers on Thursday afternoon.

The woman fell unconscious soon after her youngest son visited her at the panchayat office.

She died while being taken to a hospital late in the afternoon, sources said.

Advice not heeded

When contacted, Aswapuram Sub-Inspector of Police Santosh said the five sons of the elderly widow including a retired government employee did not heed the advice given by their relatives to settle the land issue amicably among themselves and look after their elderly mother well.
