PTI Team Anna members display files containing evidence of corruption against 15 ministers serving in the UPA government, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, at a press conference in New Delhi on Saturday.

With Prime Minister Manmohan Singh declaring that he will quit public life if corruption allegations are proved against him, Team Anna on Wednesday demanded an independent probe into the charges, saying they will be most happy if these are proved wrong.

Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal said it was not they who came up with charges against him but it was in the report of the Comptroller and Auditor General on coal bloc allocations.

“We will be most happy if the allegations levelled against the Prime Minister, is found false. But how will it be proved? For that we need to have an independent investigating agency to probe it,” he told reporters.

“The Prime Minister has said that the allegations levelled against him were baseless, unfortunate and irresponsible. We want to tell him that it was not we who levelled these allegations but the CAG, which is a Constitutional body,” he said.

Mr. Kejriwal said he would like to ask the Prime Minister whether he considered “irresponsible” the CAG report which is pegging a loss of Rs. 1.80 lakh crore to the exchequer in the allocation of coal blocs.

Team Anna’s reaction came following Dr. Singh’s remarks that he will quit public life if corruption allegations are proved against him.

“If there is even an iota of truth in it, then I will give up my public career and the country can give me any punishment,” the Prime Minister had said, adding his public life has been an open book.

Another Team Anna member Justice Santosh Hegde said it is “extremely difficult” to believe that allegations raised by Team Anna against Dr. Singh could exist but demanded an inquiry if there are documents to suggest that some wrongdoing was done.

“It is extremely difficult for me to believe, having seen the Prime Minister all these years, to say that such an allegation could exist. But at the same time, if somebody has said it is in documentary form, I think an inquiry should be held,” he said.

In his comments, Mr. Hegde said, “if there are materials that are there, I think an inquiry should be held.”

However, he said, he had not seen any of the documents Team Anna had sent to Dr. Singh seeking inquiry. “With regards to the charges made by Team Anna, I don’t have the facts with me,” he said.

On Dr. Singh’s remarks that the public should make up its mind whether Team Anna’s kind of politics will rule the roost in India, Mr. Kejriwal said they do not do politics.

“We are just common people who are affected by corruption and price rise. We oppose the kind of politics prevailing in the country. Today’s politics is snatching the food from the children, forcing farmers to commit suicide when some ministers are given permission to indulge in scams and get more richer,” he said.

Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy, however, attacked Team Anna claiming that they had accused Dr. Singh of corruption and want him to be prosecuted but alleged that they have not specified under which section of Prevention of Corruption Act is he prima facie guilty.

He asked Anna Hazare to leave the group which is in the grip of “Naxalite-minded crazies” and join him and Ramdev in the fight against corruption.

Mr. Kejriwal refused to respond to Dr. Swamy’s allegations saying they will not reply to such remarks.

Mr. Bhushan said Dr. Singh should have gone through the documents accompanying the ‘charge sheet’ before terming them as “irresponsible allegations...He should respond to them on a point-by-point basis, fact by fact basis.”

Another Team Anna member Kiran Bedi said, “PM is first among equals. If his equals are under a cloud as a leader of the team it is good leadership to set up an SIT to know the truth. If PM is clean, he can come out clean. Please submit to investigation. It shall be the lawful way to disprove CAG’s deductions,” she said.

Those who fear investigation definitely have something to hide.. Let the
cat come out of the bag and unveil the truth.. I cant believe that UPA
govt and all its ministers and idol of honesty and righteousness.. If
they come out clean after investigation, they will get to prove their
honesty.. so why fear?

Team Anna should not continue these efforts to be in the limelight all the time. If the people of India deem that the PM is not honest, they will throw out him at the next elections. Democracy cannot function if the PM has to quit every time a group [even if it consists of a considerable number ] comes up with something against the PM. Give him enough freedom so that he can govern instead of preparing replies to the 'civil' society. Especially when the 'civil' society has nothing against the present Tamilnadu rulers or BJP ruled states. Do they think that those states are corruption free????

The natonal resources are the asset of the people of india. we formed ourselves a executive system to manage the country. There is a set of rules underwhich the excutive should rule. Those rules are embedded in our Constitution. There are constitutional bodies to monitor the executive (Prime minister and the council of Ministers). CAG is one of the constitutional body to monitor and audit the govenment whis is run by the P.M and his ministers. If the national resources are well managed and the goverment gets good revenue from the national resources, then the people can live happily and there will be no poverty. The people, who are looting the country, are really enjoying the right to property given by our constitution and at the same time not obeying the rule of governance laid down by our constitution. The people of india have every right to demand any enquiry to find out the truth and to punish the culprit. To do this, they have to support the team Anna which is daring to bring truth

prime minister alone is not responsible for the scams and wrong happenings in the country.but nothing can happen without his consent.all the cabinet ministers together make the prime minister.hence let the investigation not be restricted to pm alone. it is high time for the implementation of some stringent measures irrespective of the post and position of the incumbents. afterall, all of them are answerable to the people of the country.

Has Team Anna made any thing specific charges against the prime minister with any specific proof? The prime minister may be accused of inaction on certain occasions but calling him 'corrupt' is just a bit too much when there is not really proof in any form. Note that it is a coalition government and he has to make many compromises with allies to run the government. We can not ignore the fact that we have been having a stable government for a while and that has helped the country to make progress on many fronts. And Team Anna can only get worse from here.

It is the responsibility of the Prime Minister to prove that his ministry is not involved with corruption and looting.Every child of India knows that political society is extremely corrupt and involved with all types of illegality.People have no faith on any government organization who is to investigate the case properly or without any interference.CBI.CAG.PAC have so far failed miserably to punish these criminals. This is our democracy.

To me observations by Team Anna are only fair. Defending the indefensible, PM as head of executive is responsible for all that goes wrong. Enquiries by politicians such as PAC, mean nothing. SIT is correct suggestion.

What on earth , these people keep looking for, where is the honorable CAG, why hasn't he intervened in this matter yet ???? And the point is, if really they posses any such report, then they should make it public, and just stop creating a hullabaloo every now and then. And what separate investigating agency are they talking about, are they trying to amend the Constitution all by themselves ???? O Please, stop it! Already our nation is going through crisis, so please let the people work and think of coming out of it. just don't create a mess to gain Public attention. And if you think that you can rule better, then just make a point of contesting elections after 2 years, I am sure you will get the majority. Then think of changing the so called Corrupt system.

I don't understand team anna want to do like this. Going against a PM of a country will never benefit them and it is like trying for a jock pot. I team anna really wants to serve for the country just they have to start from the grass root level and make anti corruption bodies at low level first

Anna and his team are making wild allegations against an honest man. Well, even Sitamai was doubted. Now Anna wants PM to agree to an independent probe so that he (PM) could prove his innocence. If not, according to Anna, he is guilty as accused. This is what Lokpal of Anna would have been empowered to do. Any one could make an allegation, go to Lokpal who will be required by law to undertake an inquiry. Imagine each Indian making an allegation against another India. I am sure Anna's next step will be to go on fast unto death if PM does not agree to what Anna and his henchmen demand. Well at least he and others will loose weight, which will do good to their health.

India desperately needs effective anti-corruption measures ie Jan Lokpal (to deter national plunders and endemic corruption through sanctions/punishment, create a culture of change by protecting whistle-blowers and encouraging them to help with the clean-up, prevent through systemic changes etc) in order to preserve Indian society for current and future generations, before everything descends into a deeper hell. THIS IS A TIME FOR ALL GOOD PEOPLE TO JOIN HANDS. Citizens are wistfully looking up to Dr Subramanian Swamy, a learned lawyer with impeccable credentials in fighting corruption, to provide leadership, and not give anyone a chance (however unintentionally) to create a rift in this small group of patriotic people engaged in this extremely difficult task of reining in corruption, FOR THE GOOD OF THE COUNTRY.

Since PM has challenged the Anna Team to prove the corruption charges concerning the sale of coals, why don't you do that? You should file a case against the PM before the court? Unless you take up this challenge we are wasting our time talking about Corruption. It is an act of omission that PM did not take the responsibility to see that the sale of coal we free of corruption. Also as a PM he did not take the responsibility that his team members are free of corruption.

The issue I see is that, the personality of our politicians, especially good politicians, they cannot make quick decisions, period! They are brought up in a conservative environment and their communication skills are bad too. During the 2G scam inquiry proceedings, never did the PM accepted the fact that there are ministers in his cabinet who have done any wrongdoings. The leadership and boldness was missing from our PM. Every body has this question, does the PM of India has more power and authority or does the PM's political party's leader has more authority over the proceedings of this country?? In this scenario, the PM should definitely order an independent probe and bring out the truth, and it should happen in a swift manner. Can anything in India happen in a swift manner???? only scams I guess!

Team Anna is trying to bring about a revolution in corruption-ridden India which I think is unlikely to be successful. The problem facing the nation could be solved by tweaking the system instead of completely overhauling it. For example, when there is a serious lack of an impartial investigating agency they should have concentrated on how to free the CBI from the clutches of the government and directed their struggle to this end. Police reform is another area that needs urgent attention. Instead they decided to solve our problem with too many dysfunctional institutions with another institution called Lokpal that was projected as a panacea. As a result we now have the government attempting to nip it in the bud and Team Anna desperately raking up one issue after another to stay relevant while their struggle is going haywire. Mr. Kejriwal must understand that the more he pushes the more he will be pushed back and the country will face a perpetual stalemate. The strategy should change.

I wonder , how some one can still refer to Mr Singh as a honorable person . Whether he personally is sane or not is immaterial . He has afford to be a mute spectator of the most corrupt regime in independent India ,It would be naive to believe that such monumental corruptions would have failed to evade his attention . Above all , this particular coal scam , seems to have taken place in his own department and the CAG report confirms that . It is pretty clear that he is personally corrupt or he is letting things go knowingly at the behest of his boss. This is shame of a person of such high dignity and academics. Atleast if he leaves now , people of India would be thankful for his belated honesty and realization.

CAG as well as Team Anna have lost their focus and are trying to sensationalize every issue. 2G was an absolute scandal, wherein there is evidence for someone materially benefited for their wrongdoings. Coal block allocation seems to be an absolute policy decision. The major benefactor is Coal India. If the coal blocks were sold as prescribed by CAG, then the price of everything (literally everything!) could soar due to the impact to power and manufacturing industries. There was once a spa in Chennai Spencer Plaza which used to sell fresh oxygen on an hourly basis. Had CAG knew about this spa, they would have created a report blaming that Govt is giving free air to breath to its citizen and thereby losing trillions of dollars to the exchequer. Absolute nonsense.

From the kinds of calossal loss to the country from the scams - 2G, commonwealth games, coal mines ,etc. it is very clear that PM does not feel, at all, acountable to the public of this country. Further Shri Anna Hazare's movemement to bring a strong Lok Pal Bill, Baba Ramdev's agitation to bring back the black money in the country and some other awareness programs(like Satyameva Jayate) would definitely bring real changes in the country. These programs are making it clear in the minds of common Indians that the past Congress Govts. and the present UPA-II has made mess of all the civic systems of the country. People hate to listen the remarks given in the media by the political leaders of any party, specially the congress people who teach the common man not to pay bribe but the fact is they themselves have created the environment (over last around 60 years) in which an honest person can't survive at all.

CAG Report should be made public before any further action is taken on PM's office. Every one is equal before law and normally if any thing goes wrong in Public/Private Limited Company, than a huge punishment is given to MANAGING DIRECTOR/ CEO Of the company. Why not it is not same for Government bodies. For example if train is met with accident and people die due to quality of rails and minister or CEO of railways are omitted from punishment but where as not in a PRIVATE SECTOR. Is there any privileges given to our said rulers and bureaucratic machinery for not accountable to their duties? Is the Law different from government run bodies to private run bodies?

No one speak about this violation of our sacred constitution. From the all the activities and non activities of PM, no inference can be drawn whether he is ideologue or statesman to implement his agenda anyhow. "Allocation of coal blocks was never looked upon as a potential source for generating revenue for the central government." This is what the Prime Minister's office has said in reply to charges against him when he was in charge of coal ministry. Government needs no revenue from the vast coal resources available in the country since that will affect infrastructure development in the country. But government was not allotting coal blocks to infrastructure developers. Corporates like Reliance took them and bagged the profit. And what is the policy of the government with regard to the other energy source that is petroleum products. Make maximum money by raising price periodically. What may be advanced as defence arguments in inquiry or investigation may not be allowed to stall an independent investigation. Let an inquiry take place. Government may place these things before the inquiry commission.

Mr PM,

Which kind of politics will rule India ???

My question to you is "Which kind of policies will be adopted by Govt ?" India definitely deserves a PM better than you. May I know when should a PM be held accountable in a Democratic political setup ?

I think TEAM ANNA should consider the legalities of bringing the
relevant CAG documents into public domain without casting aspersions
on anybody. After all the CAG have done some ground work and come to
some inferences. These cannot be without some basis somewhere. The media
must take it up further and publish the same in all vernaculars. The
whole of India should know the contents of the CAG reports. Meanwhile,
the Hon'ble PM should not hesitate to set up a special investigation
team to do a prelim probe.Based on its findings, the matter can be
taken up further. It is best to avoid incriminating the institution of
PM till these things are concretised.

Dr.Subramaniam Swamy obviously doesn't want competition in hunting down corrupt politicians. If Dr.Swamy wants governmental corruption to be fought and eradicated quickly, he should welcome others joining in the fight and not redicule them.

The present prime minister can be accused of inaction against his alleged corrupt ministers. The corrupt ministers fell one after another. The PM saw this with his open eyes. His inaction helped them keep in power for long. But outside pressure kicked them out. This should have been done by him only. This inaction tantamount to abetting the crime against the nation. The PM should resign. He cannot deny the collective responsibility as a cabinet minister. The nation is eagerly waiting to know why the PM tried to shield the corrupt. It appears that there may be more corrupt ministers/politicians not caught till now.

why these jokers don't seek justice through court ? because they don't believe in constitution of our country. They are self proclaimed Christ hence should be given the treatment that they deserve (as in case of self proclaimed gods)I wonder why public is so tolerant of these goons, that they are speaking any thing against the govt & ministers of only Congress- why the hell these goons have nothing against the other governments ... is a very big question mark...

Team Anna can do anything to be in the media coverage.Mr Manmohan Singh is the best PM,our country has ever had.We should respect him and grateful to him for serving India and leading us towards the prosperous India.Rather than calling him Madam's man or being remotely controlled and nonsensical things that come from hopeless members of BJP or Team Anna.BJP is the who had claimed India to be shining when everything had gone awry. That BJP claims that our honorable PM should resign.I am fully confident that worthless people will not hold grounds for many days and UPA led by our beloved PM will answer them for misdeeds and groundless allegations.

Team Anna, are themselves not confirmed that the reports on the PM is correct or not they have just taken out the things what public is showing. It's a wrong way of seeking the problem. There should be a team for investigating which should be the supreme and any defense clean officer should be the head of it. After the investigation the action should be taken on the ministers like this the ministers will not get the time to hide the proofs of the corruption and we will be able to eradicate corruption from the country.
